Food chains of the wetland
Discover the producers, consumers and decomposers of the Kings Park Kooyar Kep and their roles within the freshwater wetland ecosystem. Pond dip for macro-invertebrates, use identification keys and record findings to understand how they interact within the wetland. Build food chains and make predictions about the health of the wetland.
Students will:
- Observe the biodiversity of a freshwater wetland ecosystem.
- Collect and identify different species of macroinvertebrates by examining their characteristics.
- Learn about the life cycles of various aquatic insects.
- Discuss the interdependence of organisms in a wetland habitat and their roles as a producer, consumer and decomposer (food chains).
Items to bring. water bottles, lunch/recess, insect repellent, sunscreen and a first aid kit. To prevent foraging by hungry birds we recommend students use individual backpacks.
Items to wear: Students wear their sports uniforms, closed-in shoes, a hat, and bring a raincoat in case of wet weather.
