Scotch College has a proud tradition of involvement in the PSA competition and this extends to the Four (Northern) Schools Chess Tournament.

Christ Church Grammar School, Guildford Grammar School, Hale School & Scotch College will compete in six rounds of chess. Each school will provide two teams of four players (an A team and a B team) and will play both teams from every school other than their own.

Rules of play:

  • Touch rules will apply and clocks will be used, with a time limit of 10 minutes per player
  • Touch rules include touch take and castling (must move king first)
  • The hand that moves the piece is the one that should hit the clock
  • If one player is short of time, his opponent must be trying to win if he is to claim the game on time. i.e. he should not be just making random moves while waiting for the opponent’s time to run out
  • To claim a win on time, the player must have sufficient mating material, which could be just a pawn, but usually not a rook pawn
  • The player claiming a win on time must do so himself. Spectators must not alert him to the flag fall
  • You may offer a draw but only in your own time then immediately pressing the clock. Your opponent does not have to reply until you have pressed your clock
  • There should be a sporting spirit in the interpretation of rules of play. Teachers will decide any disputes
  • Please set up boards after play
